We’ve all heard the joke, “If you have trouble sleeping at night, open a math book.”
After all, who wants to deal with boring numbers and equations—at any time of the day? In fact, the mere thought of studying math makes you groan. You’ve even tried studying with a friend, but nothing helps.
Looking at the dull, colorless, and worn out pages of a book that’s chock-full of equations makes studying feel like a chore.
But who says you have to open your math coursebook to cultivate interest in the subject? There are plenty of books that revolve around the subject that are fascinating and intriguing.
We’ve compiled a list of our favorite math books that are bound to pique your interest:
The Hidden Maths of Everyday Life by Jordan Ellenberg
Our favorite quote from the book is: “A basic rule of mathematical life: if the universe hands you a hard problem, try to solve an easier one instead, and hope the simple version is close enough to the original problem that the universe doesn’t object.”
What we love about this book is that it makes you realize the important role math plays in our lives. It’s a part of everything we do. We (literally) can’t live without it!
Whether it’s using it for budgeting, paying off a mortgage, or baking, we need math in our lives. This book focuses on changing the perception people have of the subject.
A Beautiful Mind by Sylvia Nasar
The chances are that you’ve probably watched the film. But the book delves deeper into the brilliant mind of John Nash (one of the greatest mathematicians of our time.)
It looks at his life and his struggle with mental illness. Despite his struggles, he was able to elaborate on The Game Theory, and won a Nobel Peace Prize for his astounding work.
If you loved the film, you’ll definitely enjoy reading the book!
The Man Who Loved Only Numbers by Paul Hoffman
This book is another autobiography. It’s based on the life of mathematician, Paul Erdős. Erdős’ love for math can’t be described in words, but the book comes real close.
It focuses on his life, how he fell in love with numbers, and also includes quotations and equations from him. It’s a must-read if you want to understand how the power of math can change and transform the lives of people.
The Black Swan by Nassim Nicholas Taleb
According to Wikipedia, the black swan theory is, “is a metaphor that describes an event that comes as a surprise, has a major effect, and is often inappropriately rationalized after the fact with the benefit of hindsight.”
Our favorite quote from the book is, “Missing a train is only painful if you run after it! Likewise, not matching the idea of success others expect from you is only painful if that’s what you are seeking.”
Why do we only acknowledge things that have happened to us after they’ve happened? How do we fool ourselves into doing things we regret? Taleb’s book is an eye-opener, focusing on all the “black swan” events that could’ve been avoided if we had taken the right measures.
